Katharine DoveKatharine is one of Cheltenham’s more recent artistic finds. Her busy career working in organisational development has meant a lot of travel and little free time. While she has always had some form of creative outlet it is only since 2006 that Katharine has pursued her art more seriously and found herself a niche, particularly her Cheltenham buildings. Inspiration is found on day to day walks through the town and on longer dog walks through the Cotswolds. Wider travels both in the UK and abroad widen her perspective still further. Pictures are generally painted on large canvases using a variety of media. Her subjects include Cheltenham and Cotswold scenes , flowers from her own garden, animals and pictures painted while sailing or abroad.“I paint from the heart. I’m interested in capturing the sense of what is before me whether a building, meadow or flower. For me it is about the essence of my subjects rather than an accurate re-creation. I’m succeeding when my paintings leave the viewer asking questions, the detail is furnished through their imagination”. Katharine’s colourful and heavily textured canvases are now emerging on the walls of many Cheltenham and Cotswold homes. Early exhibitions have been virtual sell outs and already people are coming back to add to their collections. “We love her work, the Cheltenham scenes are so inviting. I want to walk right in, sit down and order my glass of wine”. Katharine’s love of painting is evident in her finished work. “We felt we had to take a painting home as we could feel the joy that every stroke and flick of the paint brush had brought the artist”. Largely self taught, Katharine benefits from the freedom this gives her. Working well outside of any artistic box she is at liberty to create images in her own way. Her studio is evidence of this artistic freedom, each wall a work of art in its own right with paint splashes everywhere! |
